Be Careful What You Think About

The other day I went to a restaurant for lunch. A nice place where they box up your leftovers for you instead of making you do it yourself. This sometimes makes me anxious, as I don't like the food leaving my control.

Deciding what to order led me to thinking about leftovers. I thought, it must be hard for the waiter to remember to box something up -- it must be second nature to toss it as soon as they get in the back (I pictured food sliding off the plate in the back room). Then I let it go and moved on.

After I ate, at least half of my main course was left, so I asked for it to go. As you may have guessed, a few minutes later my waiter came back and with great apologies told me he had dropped it when he got into the back. He offered me free dessert or coffee, which I declined. I felt responsible, as if I had made him do it!

So... be careful what you spend your energy thinking about!
